Why I bought a mac again…

I have a horrible confession to make…  I am someone who loves technology and manages to destroy all of my gadgets…  Maybe I love them *too* much.  I’m on my third smartphone this year (no more warranty replacements … need to be careful from now on.

About 6 weeks(!) ago, my hard drive failed.  My local computer guy came over and took it away.  Two ago, I found out that it wasn’t the hard drive — the mother board was destroyed.  The local guy sent it to apple (since it was still under warranty) – they found some mysterious red dust which somehow invalidated the warranty. I suspect when my daughter broke the DVD drive (which never was repaired) – the residue wore off and started to slowly corrupt the mother board.

So… I was faced with a choice.  Get a new mac (not cheap – even though I like the 13″ ones) or maybe spend less on a PC.  I do some video editing and some graphics work — but that is far from the majority of my work — so I didn’t have to get a mac again.  I’ve been managing moderately well with free software on my itty bitty hp mini (9 inch screen 2GB of RAM) — so a PC would work.

Still, I chose a mac again and here is why…

Reason #1 – Software I have thousands of dollars invested in mac software that I can reinstall when I get my computer back.  I should have it all up and running in an hour or so…  Also, in doing the comparison I noticed that Mac software is generally less expensive than its PC counterpart.  Finally,  there are a few mac-only titles (omni focus!)  that I would miss with a PC.

Reason #2 – Virus Protection It takes forever to boot up my PC with its 5 minute long virus protection routine.  Yes, macs can get viruses but they don’t automatically get them like PCs seem to.

Reason #3 – Convenience The mac makes it easy to get a screenshot or make a pdf (things I do a thousand times a day.

Reason #4 – The Cafe OK – -this is silly — but it seems that all the people that work virtually at my local coffee shop have apples — why is that?

Anyway, my new computer comes on Tuesday!  I bought it at B&H photo which ended up being $400 less expensive that the apple store.

Which are you mac or PC?
